LockBit hacker group taken down

World's most harmful cyber crime group taken offline

The National Crime Agency has revealed details of an international disruption campaign targeting LockBit, the world’s most harmful cyber crime group.

After infiltrating the group’s network, the NCA took control of LockBit’s services, compromising their entire criminal enterprise.

LockBit have been in operation for four years and during that time, attacks utilising their ransomware were prolific. It has targeted thousands of victims worldwide, including the UK and US, causing losses of billions of pounds, dollars and euros, in ransom payments and in the costs of recovery. LockBit also provided ransomware-as-a-service to an international network of hackers , supplying the tools and infrastructure required to carry out attacks.

They used malicious software to steal data and encrypt systems form thousands of victims, and demanded a ransom, payable in cryptocurrency, to decrypt the files and prevent stolen data from being published.
