UK MoD data breach

UK MoD data breach

Up to 272,000 service personnel affected

The UK government has launched a full investigation after a cyber attack on the Ministry of Defence was carried out on a third-party payroll system containing details of armed forces personnel.  They say that hostile foreign State involvement cannot be ruled out

The breach has potentially compromised the bank details of all serving personnel and some veterans.  A small number of addresses may also have been accessed.

The UK defence secretary, Grant Shapps, said there is evidence of “potential failings” of the contractor – Shared Services Connected Ltd (SSCL) – in the operation of the affected payroll system, “which may have made it easier for the malign actor” to gain access to the details of up to 272,000 service personnel and veterans.
